I want to talk about windows and art. Let me explain.
1) Art creates windows of opportunity. Music can go in front of me and prepare a way for my arrival. For example, I grew up in Oregon and have played many shows their growing up. Well in all those years I havent played Bend. Just last month a radio station there started playing my song and guess what? I now have a show in Bend. The Holy Spirit can use music to open doors and prepare the hearts of others. And more practically it can buy me plane tickets and hotel rooms.
2) Art like windows allows me to look outside. It is a way for me to express and makes sense of the world Im living in.
3) Art like windows allows others to look inside. It gives others a porthole reality into my impressions. Artists want to be known - not necessarily popular - but known. They want to be listened too and understood. I think one of the reasons God created the world and you and me is to be known. This is where a lot of people are tranquilized by fear. They are afraid to open up their curtains and let others look inside. They calculate the risk of being vulnerable and decide its best to just live. But artists cant just live - they have to create. Whether its painting, writing or singing artists feel the purpose of being alive in using their gift in the community they are in. Some feel this impulse far outweighs the fear of what others may think or say. Some are still afraid to take that first step.
4) Art like windows come in different shapes and sizes. The style of a window in a building is consistent with the entire structure.
5) Windows are useless without a building. Someone once told me if you want to work on your art - work on your life. Or in other words, you write what you live. Have you ever saw a window that wasnt part of a structure? I havent. Let me explain. If my life is a house then the foundation are my core beliefs. (Who am I? Who is God? Why am I alive? Whats the purpose of life?) The paint on a house and the way its structured is the way I was born and the way I dress. I let my family and friends come inside my house. My neighborhood is my community and the culture I live in. On this flight from Jacksonville to San Diego I started to examine the past three years of my life. I realize at times feelings of disconnect came when I was touring nonstop with a lack of community. Those are the times when I have focused too much energy and attention on the window instead of the house and my neighborhood. You know its funny - you never look at a window just to look at a window. You look through a window to see whats on the other side or your reflection in it. I believe its important of course to create a window with skill and style just like a musician creates his or her song but the view were seeing and the life were leading is what its all about. Music isnt my life but an expression of my life.
I hope this turned some lights on in your house. Music and writing are my windows but your window might be something totally different than mine. Can you think of what it may be? If so, please share in a comment with a couple kudos. It would be a dull world with out art. I encourage you to develop the gifts you have been given and share them. Open up the shades and let the Son come in.

| You make a good point. How we create to be known, it is our expression. I think about this sometimes how God created the world and us in His image and how He intended us for a purpose. I sometimes miss that. So it is good to think of the windows and the structures that hold them in. |
